Classification Description Summary
Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical environmental sanitary engineering work; calibrates, maintains, and operates water and wastewater monitoring equipment; conducts water, storm water, and wastewater field tests for flow, pH conductance and other physical and chemical characteristics; reviews and evaluates industrial wastewater monitoring reports; and provides assistance to professional level engineering staff.
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Calibrate, maintain, and operate water and wastewater monitoring equipment such as flow, pH and conductivity meters and automatic samplers; maintains records for water and wastewater equipment use, and chain of custody for water and wastewater samples; conduct water, storm water, and wastewater field tests for flow, pH conductance and other physical and chemical characteristics; review and evaluate industrial wastewater monitoring reports.
Conduct surveys of industrial users' facilities to determine compliance to regulations and sources of illegal discharges into public sewer and storm water systems; writes reports; collects water, storm water, and wastewater samples to meet local, state, and federal monitoring requirements.
Assist in the preparation of water, storm water, and wastewater quality reports for submittal to local, state, and federal agencies.
Operate computer and software applications to manage and maintain storm water and wastewater quality data; maintain industrial user files for monitoring reports, business licenses applications, and correspondence; respond to customer inquiries regarding water quality and industrial pretreatment requirements.
Assist Environmental Control Officers in clean up of sewage, chemical, and petroleum product spills; pickup contaminated wastes and transport to proper disposal facility.
Perform and verify mathematical calculations and measurements submitted by commercial users to assure proper allowances; read water meters as necessary.
Perform commercial and industrial waster assessments and assist staff with public education programs.
Respond to citizen questions and complaints by telephone, at the service counter, or in writing; advise citizens of requirements, codes, and regulations; provide information regarding environmental engineering practice and policy.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college level course work in environmental studies, engineering, chemistry, or a related field.
Two years of responsible technical environmental control or wastewater treatment experience.
License or Certificate:
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.
Technician level Emergency Response certification issued by OSHA.
