Humana Director, Pharmaceutical Manufacturer Relations - HP Supply Chain in Las Vegas, Nevada


The Director of Pharmaceutical Manufacturer Relations role reports through Humana’s Pharmacy Supply Chain team and performs various strategic sourcing, contract negotiation, category management, supplier relationship management and financial related work in support of Humana’s mail order, specialty, staff model and hospice pharmacy distribution operations. Work activities may include, but may not be limited to, ensuring access to new and existing industry products, continuity of supply of quality pharmaceuticals, market competitive product pricing, collaborative strategic sourcing of pharmaceuticals with other Humana cross functional departments, strategic supplier relationship management and utilization of data analysis and reporting to drive optimal decision making. This role will need to be able to manage a category team of sourcing professionals, work independently & cross-functionally, and use different systems or tools to complete data retrieval & analysis. This role is also responsible for developing & refining category processes, cost of goods and business case financial modeling and reporting.


This position is responsible for:

Development of category strategic sourcing plans and tactics to optimize Humana’s pharmaceutical cost of goods, product access, product quality and supply continuity.

Achievement of category performance goals for pharmaceutical cost of goods, product access, supply continuity and other business objectives.

Effective management of primary and backup pharmaceutical wholesaler agreement pricing & terms and overall relationship to meet category goals and business objectives.

Lead the pharmaceutical wholesaler contractual price audit and reconciliation processes, including the management of external audit service suppliers.

Lead efforts to track and validate the appropriate loading and reconciliation of all manufacturer chargeback agreements at Humana’s primary wholesaler and secondary distributors, as appropriate.

Ensure Humana Pharmacy is sourcing and ordering products from most cost effective source of supply

Work cross functionally with the Inventory Planning team to develop and implement inventory strategies to support current product usage, future product shortages, price inflation and other industry changes to ensure supply continuity and optimize cost of goods.

Develop and execute strategic sourcing projects for the assigned category products to optimize cost of goods and benchmark pricing competitiveness (wholesaler, distributor & brand manufacturer purchase channels)

Identify and executing upon brand manufacturer direct purchasing opportunities to optimize cost of goods, product access and supply continuity

Lead the relationship management activities associated with Humana’s brand pharmaceutical manufacturers, wholesalers, limited distribution partners, GPO’s and related suppliers.

Develop and implement backup supply strategies for Humana’s primary wholesaler stock outages to ensure Humana supply continuity and ability to service members.

Develop methods and processes to identify, implement, track, report on and maximize GPO contract pricing financial opportunities.

Work cross functionally to manage Humana’s expired pharmaceutical returns service supplier, their performance and identify opportunities to maximize returns credit and minimize expired products.

Support Humana’s staff model pharmacies as their main point of contact for wholesaler ordering guidelines, supply issues, pricing and other topics.

Perform benchmarking of Humana’s pricing competitiveness across different wholesale source of supply to optimize cost of goods.

Support the maintenance of Humana’s pharmaceutical purchasing reporting database and the development of cross category dashboards.

Manage the day-to-day activities associated with Humana’s primary and secondary wholesalers, limited distribution partners, GPO’s and brand product manufacturers.

Track and communicate industry trends and events that may impact Humana’s pharmaceutical cost of goods, product access, supply continuity or product quality.

Develop communication processes and tools to communicate with multiple pharmacy operations and inventory teams on product awards, primary suppliers, pricing, backup sources of supply, contract adherence, etc.

Develop and implement processes, methodologies and tools to forecast and update category financial projections and financial opportunities.

Required Qualifications

  • 3-5 Years of pharmaceutical strategic sourcing and pharmaceutical category management experience.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Ability to analyze data to gain insights and drive necessary actions and project work to maximize category value.

  • Proven ability to develop strategies, financial analyses, business case justification and use negotiation tactics to drive financial value for the associated category purchases.

  • Proven ability to develop and lead a category team in category management, strategic sourcing, relationship management and value maximization project work.

  • Proven ability to work with and influence cross-functional teams driving alignment on common goals.

  • Proven ability to develop and continuously refine work processes to drive improvement in work performance, efficiency and to ensure implementation of best practices.

  • Proven ability to work independently and self-direct category work to meet category expectations and goals.

  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and presentation skills. Intermediate or advanced proficiency in MS Excel, Access and other data mining & analysis tools.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Operations, Finance or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pharmaceutical wholesaler and brand pharmaceutical sourcing and contract negotiation / redline process management experience

  • Pharmaceutical category management experience

  • Six Sigma or CPM certification preferred
