The Mob Museum Director of Retail in Las Vegas, Nevada

Position Overview:The Director of Retail contributes to the organization?s success by extending the Museum?s mission and brand through unique, profitable, and world class retail experiences. This individual is responsible for overseeing both contracted and in-house retail efforts, onsite as well as online. The Director of Retail creates and implements strategies that result in financial growth, while leveraging opportunities to increase guest comfort and enjoyment within the Museum. Equally important, the Director leads the development of an online retail presence envisioned to become a dominant source of thematically aligned merchandise and offerings. Reporting to the VP of Marketing, the Director of Retail is a key member of the management team, providing strong leadership in support of the organization?s mission, vision, and values.

Major Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the organization?s primary champion of retail, identifying opportunities to cultivate revenue streams while advancing a culture of world class service in all guest interactions and contact points between the Museum and the public

  • Actively contribute as a member of the director-level management team, determining institutional goals and strategies. Participate in key decision-making and strategy development for the organization.

  • Provide direct supervision of Museum?s third-party retail vendor and other staff dedicated to retail operations.

  • Engage third-party vendor in merchandising decisions, including product mix, display and design, and pricing. Monitor performance metrics and facilitate discussions that ensure ongoing improvement.

  • Determine merchandise and offerings for online sale, including one-of-a-kind products and experiences that align with the mission and brand of the Museum.

  • Cultivate vendor and supplier relationships to enhance opportunities for product development, while minimizing costs and delivery times.

  • Carefully manage inventory levels to ensure availability of products with optimum carrying costs.

  • Collaborate with others in Marketing and Finance to develop reporting tools to monitor performance and trends, evaluate merchandise and pricing decisions, and extract insights about consumer behavior.

  • Develop annual merchandising plans and operating budgets, as well as pro forma projections to plan for new retail initiatives.

  • Collaborate with others in Marketing, Exhibits and Programs, and Public Operations to enhance the layout and storytelling within the onsite and online retail spaces. Encourage the creation of retail spaces that integrate with, and extend, the Museum experience.

  • Identify ways to increase retail opportunities in established concessions, souvenir photography, and other kiosks and activations.

  • Collaborate with others to develop, evaluate and execute retail offerings related to Museum events, programs, anniversaries and other unique opportunities.

  • Oversee and, to the extent necessary, directly participate in the order fulfillment process. Evaluate shipping process to ensure high quality and best possible pricing.

  • Ensure sound inventory management through an accurate receiving, maintenance, and shipping process.

  • Prevent loss by educating staff, monitoring daily retail activities, ensuring company policies are followed.

  • Establish and maintain onsite store standards to achieve superior product presentation and a visual merchandising aesthetic consistent with Museum?s brand.

  • Make decisions and adaptations to merchandising based upon the layout needs of the store, ensuring that product is displayed in a manner which tells a story through presentation in a compelling and authentic manner.

  • Ensure that all retail operations are consistent with statutory and regulatory requirements including those related to alcohol sales, sales taxes, shipping, and the like.

  • Lead all retail-related complaint handling and service recovery efforts, in person, via phone, or through written correspondence.

  • Manage department budget and provide explanation for financial results. Initiate discussion with Finance department and proactively institute expense adjustments, when necessary.

  • Stay abreast of organizational and community happenings such that staff will be knowledgeable and readily disseminate relevant information to guests. Ensure the active promotion of daily Museum offerings, upcoming programs and events.

  • Demonstrate leadership in fostering an organizational culture that values innovation, promotes inclusion, and inspires excellence in the work environment.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience / Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A minimum of 5years of experience in retail management.

  • Sales-driven and results oriented. Immense creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Willing to be hands-on, work within a team environment, and fulfill operational and organizational needs.

  • Demonstrated experience in purchasing, including development of supplier/vendor relationship, negotiating pricing and other sales terms, navigating shipping and supply line logistics, and receiving and inventory control.

  • Firm understanding of inventory management best practices. Proficiency with at least one common inventory management software platform.

  • Demonstrated experience in retail product development, from ideation, to sourcing, to merchandising and price determination.

  • Exceptional ability to evaluate retail performance, understand and interpret metrics and trends, and make data-driven decisions.

  • Prior success in online retail sales and management.

  • Experience in alcohol sales is preferred.

  • Prior experience in attraction-based (museum, aquarium, theme park, zoo, etc.) is preferred.

  • Proven track record of developing, building, motivating, training and supervising a strong team of employees.

  • Exceptional leadership and management skills, with the ability to engage a diverse range of individuals in matters of vision and strategy, as well as day-to-day workplace issues.

  • Able to take ownership of problematic situations using proper judgment to find possible solutions or alternatives. Leadership skills necessary for responding authoritatively under stress.

  • Superior interpersonal, facilitation, and public speaking skills. Prior experience with crisis management and service recovery.

  • Passion for creating a world-class museum that is unrivaled in content and recognized for a truly outstanding guest experience.

  • Enthusiasm for working in an organization where change is frequent, structure is evolving, and flexibility, teamwork, and good humor are absolute necessities.

  • Proficient computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Database and additional software knowledge is preferred.

  • Able to constantly operate a computer, phone, or other office productivity machinery.

Education: Bachelor?s degree in a related field. (Retail management experience may be substituted for degree).
